How To Registar For The SAT Reasoning Test

If you (or your student) are thinking about taking the SAT -- including Subject Tests! -- now is the time to start the registration process. Registration deadlines are typically about 4 to 5 weeks prior to the exam date. For example, if you are planning on taking the October 6 test, registration needs to be completed no later than September 10. There are late deadlines available, but fees DO apply! See the official calendar for more details (http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/calenfees/calenfees2.html).

The SAT and College Board have provided two easy ways to register for the exam: online or by mail. Whether you are planning on taking the SAT Reasoning or SAT II Subject Tests, either of these registration types is designed in a clear, step-by-step process to ensure quick and painless pre-test preparation.

SAT Registration - Online

  1. Go to the official College Board SAT Registration website (http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/reg.html).
  1. If this is your first time navigating the College Board website, you’ll need to set up a free account. Information is required about the student who will be taking the exam, and adding a parent name to the account is optional. The parent will receive important e-mails and announcements regarding the student’s account, but does not have access to the account itself unless the student decides to give the parent his/her username and password. This account can be used to register for the SAT and to re-register for future exams, if necessary. It can also for post-test purposes, to view your SAT scores or to send them to your potential college choices.
  1. Once you’ve set up an account, you can now register online for the SAT. A credit card is required for this registration type (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover are all accepted). Registration should take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete, and you should receive instant confirmation via e-mail once the process is completed.

SAT Registration – Mail

  1. Though online registration is quicker, not everyone is eligible for it. Mail registration is open to everyone but is necessary for those who fit these qualifications:
  1. The first thing you will need for mail registration is an SAT Registration Booklet, which your school counselor should have available. This booklet includes all necessary information regarding the SAT (test dates, test centers, registration deadlines, fees, instructions) as well as the official Registration Form and return envelope.
  1. Once you have completed ALL of the required information, send the Form and check or money order for the proper amount back to the address on the return envelope. All mailed materials must be postmarked by the registration deadline. We recommend that you allow 2 to 3 weeks for processing, just in case there are any errors on your form; this will give the College Board the ability to return your information for corrections in enough time to still meet your registration deadline.
