1st Grade English

Students learn and apply phonics principles to read short and extended texts with appropriate speed and accuracy. They ask and answer questions about what they read and learn to summarize beginning, middle and end. They extend their understanding of texts identify fundamental literary devices such as characterization and plot. 2nd Grade English

Students hone their reading skills, improving reading speed and accuracy with extended phonics review and guided reading to support comprehension. Student will learn active reading strategies and will focus on identifying the main idea of each paragraph and use that understanding to make connections between the paragraphs. The students will also begin to learn to write short informative and narrative multi-sentence compositions using details, facts, and definitions to develop their ideas and describe actions. 3rd Grade Reading and Writing

In our 3rd Grade Reading/Writing class, students will develop the the proficiency necessary for the upcoming school year through interactive, exciting projects based on both literary and informative texts. Focusing on the imperative shift from learning to read to reading to learn, student will synthesize information from one text with information gleaned from another, honing critical comprehension skills through modeling, discussion, discovery, and engagement. 4th Grade Reading and Writing

In our 4th Grade Reading/Writing class, students will develop the the proficiency necessary for the upcoming school year through interactive, exciting projects based on both literary and informative texts. Specifically, students will learn the characteristics of each major genre by reading and exploring texts from each category. Once they have learned what makes each type of writing unique and useful, they will produce their own short compositions, building the essential skill of composing multi-paragraph compositions. 5th Grade Reading and Writing

In our 5th Grade Reading/Writing class, students will develop the the proficiency necessary for the upcoming school year through interactive, exciting projects based on both literary and informative texts. Students will learn to effectively summarize texts in order to identify the most distinctive, relevant elements necessary to report the author’s main points and purpose for writing. Additionally, they will learn to refer to specific examples when comparing and contrasting texts using details and quotations to support their viewpoints in oral and written exercises. Lastly, students will expand their understanding of narrative, expository, and persuasive texts by writing their own multi-paragraph compositions. Request more information

6th Grade Reading and Writing

In our 6th Grade Reading/Writing class, students will develop the the proficiency necessary for the upcoming school year through interactive, exciting projects based on both literary and informative texts. They will shift from focusing on reading comprehension to text analysis and response using proven strategies to identify textual evidence that supports their opinions or judgments about what they read. They will express these understandings in written response in which they edit not only for content and grammar, but also for the way in which their writing has the desired effect on the intended audience. 7th Grade Reading and Writing

In our 7th Grade Reading/Writing class, students will develop the the proficiency necessary for the upcoming school year through interactive, challenging projects based on both literary and informative texts. Students will begin to analyze texts beyond explicit, directly stated material in order to make judgments about the texts and develop evidence-based opinions. They will broaden their understanding of literary and persuasive devices and begin to identify specific instances of their use. Also, they will pinpoint details and use them as supporting citations to validate their claims in written compositions containing an introduction, body and conclusion. Request more information

8th Grade Reading and Writing

In our 8th Grade Reading/Writing class, students will develop the the proficiency necessary for the upcoming school year through interactive, challenging projects based on both literary and informative texts. At this point in the student’s learning process, they begin to shift their focus to analyzing in order to understand the structural elements and literary devices the author uses to create specific results. They learn the most common literary devices and strategies authors use and how to identify them. Additionally, they begin to effectively integrate their knowledge and ideas in order to support their findings in well-organized compositions with developed introductions, body paragraphs and conclusions. 9-10th Reading and Writing

In our 9th-10th Grade Reading/Writing class, students will develop the the proficiency necessary for the upcoming school year through interactive, challenging projects based on both literary and informative texts. Students gain an appreciation for the finer points of reading and writing by exploring, discussing and writing about the techniques authors use to communicate their ideas and inspire our imaginations. Creative Writing

Students explore their imaginations while gaining technical skill in narrative and poetic devices, completing their own composition in a multi-step writing process. Students expressive themselves and discover their own voices and ideas while learning from “the masters”, as they utilize mentor texts from published authors to guide them. Northwood High Required Reading

Students complete the required summer reading in a paced manner and engage in Socratic discussion to build understanding of the literary elements in the more difficult required texts. Classes available at the Freshman and AP levels. Request more information

Essay Writing Clinic

Students learn how to construct an argument, select evidence for relevance and impact, and showcase their reasoning through effective commentary and analysis. Attention to sub-skills in grammar, syntax, diction, organization, and voice will be emphasized throughout the course as well. Request more information

Intro to Speech and Debate

Students learn to present themselves professionally and develop and articulate their opinions to prepare for professional interactions such as job interviews and debate clubs. Emphasis will be placed both upon the presentation and content of formal speech. Request more information
